Sean Payton led the Saints to a Super Bowl championship after the 2009 season and multiple NFC championship games during his run in New Orleans.The Texans have requested to interview former Saints coach Sean Payton for their head-coaching vacancy, a person with knowledge of the situation confirmed Wednesday.
Payton, a highly sought-after candidate, has sought opportunities to re-enter coaching after retiring from the Saints after the 2021 season. In 15 seasons in New Orleans, Payton had a 152-89 overall record and won Super Bowl XLIV.
Payton, who cannot formally interview with any team until Jan. 17, has already met with the Broncos, and the Cardinals have also requested an interview. The Texans, who own the No. 2 and No. 12 overall picks in the upcoming draft, have two more first-round draft selections in 2024 and could use the capital in an exchange with the Saints. The draft positioning could also entice Payton to join a franchise whose salary cap budget is also expanding significantly this offseason.
