The Texans officially announced that they have released three players Thursday, one day after the new league year began.whom the Chronicle previously reported would be released — and defensive end Mario Addison. The moves free up additional cap space for the Texans as they look to continue to add pieces to their roster.

Cann’s release comes after the Texans traded for former Bucs offensive guard Shaq Mason, who has a $8.5 million cap number. Addison’s release comes after the Texans signed former Jets defensive tackle Sheldon Rankins to a one-year, $10 million deal.The releases of Cann, Reeves-Maybin and Addison save the Texans about $7.9 million in cap space, according to Over the Cap.

They will incur about $6.1 million in dead cap. The Texans entered free agency with the third-most cap space in the league at about $38 million. With all of their free-agent signings this week, that number is now estimated at $17 million, according to Over the Cap.
