Houston Texans Head Coach DeMeco Ryans smiles after throwing out a ceremonial first pitch before an MLB game between the Houston Astros and the Chicago Cubs on Monday, May 15, 2023, at Minute Maid Park in Houston.New Texans coach DeMeco Ryans played football and baseball among other sports growing up in Bessemer, Ala., but there was one thing in particular prompting him to throw down his catcher’s glove for good while in high school.

Ryans threw out the first pitch on Monday night at Minute Maid Park as the Astros opened a three-game series with the Chicago Cubs. For the record, he threw a strike . He said he appreciated “the opportunity to connect with fans in a different way” – aka away from NRG Stadium. Ryans, who played linebacker for the Texans from 2006-2011, said he’s enjoyed watching the Astros win two World Series since 2017 and play in two more in that span. The Texans, who started in Houston in 2002, and the Oilers before them have never so much as made a Super Bowl.
