Since last February’s winter storm I have noticed a significant shift in tone during my conversations with solar customers.This op-ed is part of a series published by The Dallas Morning News Opinion section to explore ideas and policies for strengthening electric reliability. Customers have always been interested in increasing their home value, and having access to more sustainable energy sources. Some are even motivated by the idea of having the newest technology at home. Price is often one of the biggest drivers for my customers. They want to know how much the system will cost. What’s the payback period? What are the monthly payments if financed? And what will be the monthly savings on energy bills?

Giving more homeowners the resources they need to produce and consume their own energy during power disruptions provides individual advantages and relieves strain on the broader system.
