Teva's first foray into winter hiking boots with the Auroris delivers warmth, waterproofing, and traction for winter adventures. Find out how it performs in our comprehensive review.

Teva , renowned for its wide selection of sandals, has ventured into the realm of winter hiking boots with its inaugural release of the Auroris. I've had the opportunity to test these boots over the past two weeks during the heart of winter in Upstate New York. After a brief break-in period, they proved to be true to their claim of providing winter-ready performance.

Available in both men's and women's sizes, the Auroris boasts a combination of high-end materials, including leather, suede, and ripstop, layered with a substantial 200g Thinsulate insulation to ensure warmth and dryness. The boots' contoured sole took some time to adjust to, but overall, they offer a commendable winter boot experience, even when navigating challenging terrain. My colleague and I put the Auroris through its paces, logging approximately 20 hours of wear in the frigid Upstate New York winter. Our activities ranged from hiking and chores to a 15-minute immersion in a puddle to rigorously test their waterproofing. We opted for wool socks, our standard attire for hiking boots. Both testers found the boots to be true to size. The flexible sock liner, coupled with covered seams and zippers, effectively minimized friction during movement. While the sole features a pronounced curve and the upper is straighter, this took a little time for our feet to acclimate. After several wears, they felt comfortable right out of the box. The ankle support system, incorporating speedhooks and D-rings, facilitated simple and secure lacing. The included round laces proved to be robust and withstand demanding pulls. The layered sole comprises a memory foam topsole, a layer of resilient foam, and a footbed cover, providing substantial cushioning as soon as you step into the boot. It handled the task of absorbing shock over rocky terrain with ease. The thick sole imparts a genuine winter boot feel, and the ankle support, bolstered by the lockdown lacing, is excellent. Traction, thanks to the dual-lug pattern, is good, but certain boots offer a more aggressive bite for situations involving very slippery terrain. However, the Auroris readily accommodates spikes, allowing for additional traction when required. The White Spider Rubber outsole delivers both grip and durability. The 200g Thinsulate insulation effectively maintains foot warmth in temperatures ranging from 30 to 40 degrees Fahrenheit. We tested them in conditions far colder than that, and combined with warm socks, we experienced no issues with cold toes, even around 20 degrees Fahrenheit. During warmer hikes, the insulation does not feel excessive, unlike some heavier 400g Thinsulate boots or those with multiple insulation types. Our puddle test, involving standing ankle-deep for 15 minutes, revealed the leather, suede, and nylon upper held up against water intrusion. While water penetration might occur in deeper water, this largely depends on how securely they are laced. In conclusion, Teva's first foray into true winter boots lives up to expectations. While not intended for arctic expeditions, they excel at keeping feet warm and dry during typical winter hikes. This mid-weight option will perform admirably throughout the winter season. They also garner praise for their aesthetically pleasing design.
