‘Tetris’ begins irksomely, but slowly finds its footing as a sort of diplomatic thriller with a shaggy sweetness at its heart.
takes an anarchic comedy approach to its material, probably because there isn’t a ton of serious geopolitics to wrestle with. gets off on its Ari Goldian bellowing; the hard-charging, foul-mouthed entrepreneur spirit we’ve recently seen both celebrated and mocked on TV shows about Uber and WeWork., a hectoring business guy who took the phone tech invented by a bunch of nerds and turned it into a global phenomenon.
story ultimately isn’t about a collapse from within; it’s really the iPhone that wiped the company off the map. Some internal bungles were certainly made—like compromising the brand’s integrity to get things done quick and cheap—but mostly the company fell victim to being first out of the gate and prideful in that position. It’s a cautionary tale of sorts, though one told with more raucous college-boy humor than pathos.
