Testimony is expected to continue Tuesday in the murder trial of former Fort Worth police officer Aaron Dean for the slaying of 28-year-old Atatiana Jefferson.
Dean and a partner did not announce their presence at the home in the 1200 block of East Allen Avenue and opened a back gate to walk around the house, prosecutors said Monday.Jefferson grabbed a gun and approached the window after hearing a noise outside, Zion, now 11, told jurors Monday inside the Tarrant County courthouse.
Defense lawyers called the shooting a “tragic accident” and said Dean “acted accordingly” to his perceived threat. But prosecutors argued Dean didn’t see Jefferson’s gun until after he fatally shot her. After Zion and the jury were dismissed for the day Monday afternoon, defense lawyers implied to the judge they believed Zion was coached to give an account different from his forensic interview taken after the slaying.Dean was arrested on a murder warrant two days after the shooting. Then-interim Fort Worth police Chief Ed Kraus said Dean resigned before the chief was able to fire him. Former Mayor Betsy Price and Kraus have said Jefferson was within her right to defend herself.
