Tested: 1991 Isuzu Impulse XS Has an Attitude

'Handling by Lotus' sounds good. Fortunately, it also feels good.

That's how a Lotus asso­ciate director characterized the goal of his company's ride-and-handling engi­neers when they went to work on the chassis of the new Isuzu Impulse XS. The Japanese maker commissioned Lotus to make the car feel more refined and ma­ture than the Geo Storm GSi, the virtual Impulse twin that Isuzu builds for Chev­rolet's import franchise.

Spring rates were decreased about ten percent in front and increased twenty percent in back, and anti-roll-bar diameters changed by one millimeter, down in front and up in back. Then Lotus created completely different response curves for the shocks. Compression damping stiff­ened about twenty percent at both ends, while rebound damping rose dramatical­ly: some 60 percent in back and a whopping 126 percent in front.
