Tesla is asking employees to volunteer to deliver a huge number of cars in the last two weeks of the quarter. If it doesn’t pull off what seems to be a miracle, the March quarter’s financial results could be a disaster.

The average sell-side analyst estimate has Tesla’s March quarter revenue coming in at $6.2 billion, but I suspect a number of them haven’t lowered their official projection. Most sell-side analysts don’t want to change their outlook every few weeks, as it can be a never-ending game reacting to various data points or reports.

Having to deliver 30,000 cars in the last two weeks of a quarter, when that number is 40% of the total needed to make the analyst's revenue forecast is a disaster waiting to happen. It is not unusual for any company to have an end of quarter push, but an automotive company trying to generate that much in a few weeks is very tough to do.Software companies can pull something like this off since they can push a button and “deliver” the software to a customer.
