California regulators said Thursday that Tesla is yet to apply for the necessary permits to operate a commercial robotaxi service, one day after CEO Elon Musk said the EV giant planned to do so in the state “this year.”

Waymo and Cruise were each permitted in August 2023 to offer their commercial ride-hailing services all throughout The City without restrictions. While Waymo, though not without its hiccups, has steadily expanded its fleet and services over the past 18 months, Cruise spiraled in the opposite direction.
It remains unclear whether Musk has plans to run his forthcoming robotaxi service in The City. Musk, the world’s richest person, has frequently criticized San Francisco, especially after he purchased the social media platform he renamed to “X” in 2022 for $44 billion.
