The Tesla Model Y remains Europe's best-selling electric vehicle, but sales declined in 2024. The Volvo EX30 makes a strong debut in third place, marking a shift in the European EV market.

The Tesla Model Y maintained its position as the best-selling electric vehicle (EV) in Europe last year, although its sales experienced a 17% decline compared to 2023. The Volvo EX30 emerged as a notable surprise, securing the third spot in its inaugural full year of sales. Europe faced a challenging year in 2024 for new car registrations. Overall car sales witnessed a minimal increase of less than 1% compared to 2023, with every powertrain type, except hybrids, showing a downward trend.

The all-electric segment also saw a slight dip in market share after four consecutive years of growth. While this news isn't positive, particularly when contrasted with the impressive numbers observed in the United States and China, it's not a cause for significant alarm.According to Jato Dynamics, new EV registrations in Europe decreased by 1% in 2024 compared to the previous year. Let's delve into the sales rankings of EVs and identify the leading and lagging models. The Tesla Model Y retained its top spot in Europe, but its sales volume contracted by 17% to 209,214 units. Its sedan counterpart, the Tesla Model 3, secured the second position with 112,789 units registered last year, representing a 12% increase compared to 2023.In the broader automotive market, the Model Y ranked fourth, and the Model 3 placed 27th. The Dacia Sandero emerged as the best-selling car in Europe in 2024, irrespective of its powertrain type, with 268,101 units sold, followed by the Renault Clio (216,317 units) and Volkswagen Golf (215,715 units). While the two Tesla models have dominated the European EV registration charts for several years, Volvo made a surprising entry into the top three. The newly introduced Volvo EX30, the Swedish automaker's most compact and affordable model, surpassed the Skoda Enyaq with 78,032 units registered. The Enyaq, built on the same platform as the Volkswagen ID.4, secured fourth place with 68,874 units registered, marking a 4% rise from 2023. Speaking of the ID.4, it concluded the year in fifth position, with 64,756 units registered in Europe, representing a 24% decline from 2023. The Mercedes-Benz EQB SUV witnessed the most significant surge in registrations compared to 2023 (58%), while the Fiat 500e experienced the largest drop on the top 20 list (-53%)
