Tesla Inc. nearly doubled employment at its Texas factory in the past year to rival H-E-B as the largest employer in Austin. The Elon Musk-led maker of electric vehicles, batteries and solar panels said it employed 22,777 there at the end of 2023, up from 12,300 a year earlier. It’s a continuation of Tesla’s rapid growth since moving its headquarters to Austin in late 2021 and opening its sprawling Gigafactory Texas in April 2022.

His SpaceX commercial space company is also expanding its Starship production and launch site near Boca Chica and has an engine testing facility in McGregor, near Waco. Musk broke ground last year on a lithium refinery near Corpus Christi. Bastrop is home to operations for his Boring Co.

Most of those — about 560 — were based in Austin. Growth at its Austin factory has been rapid. Tesla reported about 3,500 employees there in 2021, the year it began production. With nearly 23,000 employees, Tesla now rivals San Antonio-based H-E-B as that city’s largest employer.
