Tesla has started offering discounts on new and demo Cybertrucks in an effort to clear out inventory and potentially boost sales. The angular, unpainted steel pickups, originally unveiled in 2019, have faced competition from more affordable electric trucks and saw a decline in sales in 2024. Elon Musk apologized for delivery delays, citing the use of Cybertrucks in wildfire relief efforts.
Tesla began offering discounts on new Cybertruck vehicles in its inventory this week, according to listings on the company's website. Discounts can reach up to $1,600 off new Cybertruck s, with the reduced price varying based on configuration, and up to around $2,600 for demo versions of the trucks currently in inventory. The listings reveal that Tesla is offering these incentives to clear out its existing stock.
Production of the angular, unpainted steel pickups, originally unveiled in 2019 with a projected price of around $40,000, has finally begun. However, the base price in the U.S. for a Cybertruck ultimately climbed closer to $80,000 by 2024. This price point, initially targeted at a mainstream consumer base, put the Cybertruck at a disadvantage against competitors like Ford's F-150 Lightning, which Tesla sought to challenge. Last year, the F-150 Lightning became the fifth best-selling EV in the U.S., according to data tracked by Cox Automotive. Despite a strong year for EV demand globally, Tesla's Cybertruck sales were impacted by its high price tag. Full-year EV sales reached an estimated 1.3 million in 2024 in the U.S., a 7.3% increase from the previous year. While overall EV sales surged, Tesla's sales declined by approximately 37,000 vehicles. The Tesla Model Y SUV and Model 3 sedan continued to dominate the EV market, securing the top two best-selling positions by a significant margin. However, even these established models saw a decrease in sales compared to the previous year. Cox estimated that Tesla sold around 38,965 Cybertrucks in the U.S. last year. Recently, Elon Musk apologized to customers in California for delays in delivering their Cybertrucks. He explained that the trucks are currently being utilized to provide critical supplies and wireless internet service to people in Los Angeles affected by devastating wildfires. On X, Musk stated, 'We need to use those trucks as mobile base stations to provide power to Starlink Internet terminals in areas of LA without connectivity. A new truck will be delivered end of week.
