Here's what the government found after investigating hundreds of claimed Tesla Autopilot crashes—and what it will investigate next.driver assistance system, connecting the technology to 13 fatal crashes, and forcing the automaker to update its driver recognition programming late last year.

After a recall issued in December of 2023, Tesla now uses a steering torque sensor and an in-cabin camera to monitor driver inputs and attention. Tesla now claims: "Autopilot, Enhanced Autopilot and Full Self-Driving Capability are intended for use with a fully attentive driver, who has their hands on the wheel and is prepared to take over at any moment. While these features are designed to become more capable over time, the currently enabled features do not make the vehicle autonomous.

Our conclusion in January: "To us, this update seems clearly tailored to stave off further government action for the time being while keeping 'nags' to a minimum, not to reduce driver distraction and improve safety." It seems like NHTSA is in alignment with our conclusions, and its investigation into whether the recall is sufficient could lead to a request for further action to address the inadequacies we and NHTSA found in Tesla's driver assistance systems.
