The time to consider remote voting has arrived. The proliferation of smartphones and the introduction of 5G technology will help tremendously during a pandemic such as Covid-19, Terry Tselane.
However, amid the pandemic, there were states and jurisdictions, such as Mali and South Korea, that decided to go ahead with elections.Mali’s leadership decided to forge ahead with the vote after a few attempts to hold elections were disrupted by incidents of violence.
South Korea’s people headed to the polls on April 15 – after the World Health Organisation had declared Covid-19 a pandemic. Realising that the gathering of large groups of people would most likely lead to the spread of the virus, the commission finalised its plans only after consulting health officials.
People whose temperature was 37.5°C or above were taken to a separate voting area to ensure that they did not mix with other voters and would not inadvertently infect them. Lessons learnt from the Korean experience included that an election could be used by both an election management body and health officials as a platform to test and attend to those who required assistance.
In the long run, an election management body should seriously consider introducing electronic voting.Surely those who are conservative and have been resisting electronic voting for so long must begin to appreciate that things have changed and the world has moved on.The proliferation of smartphones and the introduction of 5G technology will help tremendously during a pandemic such as Covid-19, however, this should not only be limited to periods of crisis – it should become our new normal.
