Terry Francona played winter ball for parts of four seasons in Venezuela and managed twice in the Arizona Fall League.
The Guardians announced Friday thaton the roster of the Peoria Javelinas once AFL games get underway in October. Both Manzardo, ranked Cleveland’s No. 2 overall prospect according to MLB Pipeline, and DeLauter , missed chunks of time during the regular season and could get valuable at-bats while with Peoria.
“There’s a lot of younger players and they have stipulations on how much they can pitch, but it’s still a good league and it is good for players,” Francona said. “Any time they play the game of baseball, it’s good for ‘em.” Francona said players nowadays are more limited with their options when it comes to winter ball in Latin countries, but like the AFL, players can greatly benefit from being part of a team and seeing how other cultures react to baseball in their hometowns.
“You’re playing games that are very meaningful to those teams and so there’s an edge,” Francona said. “When you don’t pitch good, it’s not development. They want somebody coming in and pitching.
