Police say the officer pulled over a truck with expired license plates from Mississippi and called for cover. But before backup arrived, he was shot multiple times at close range.
A Terrell police officer was shot and killed while on duty late Sunday night in a motel parking lot.Investigators say 28-year-old Officer Jacob Candanoza pulled over a pickup truck with expired license plates from Mississippi around 11 p.m. in a motel parking lot off State Highway 34 near I-20 in Terrell.The officer called for cover before approaching the truck driven by 25-year-old Darrian Cortez Johnson.
He was booked into the Kaufman County jail and charged with the capital murder of a peace officer.Candanoza was taken to a hospital in Forney where he died from his injuries.The young officer was married and had a toddler daughter.Candanoza began his career at the Dallas County Sheriff's Office as a courtesy patrol officer before entering the academy in 2023. He joined the Terrell Police Department in July.
