Terraforming Mars is one of the most popular modern board games. I spoke with the desiners hoping to turn it into a role playing game.

The game’s success has lead to multiple expansions and placement on retail shelves next toThe game looks to expand into a new style of gaming with Terraforming Mars : The Role Playing Game. This RPG has raised over six figures on Backerkit as of this writing. I spoke with three members of the team to talk about the project: Ken Hite, Garther Ryder-Hanrahan and Arturo Losada.
“That’s an obvious outgrowth both of the board game and the time scales needed to make any change to the climate of Mars,” said Ryder-Hanrahan. “The game has to span a much longer time period than a regular roleplaying game, so either you introduce immortal characters or you decide you're going to switch player characters every few sessions and jump ahead in time.
“The system’s not nailed down yet,” said Ryder-Hanrahan. “The basics are Shadowlands’ own ESTIRPE system, but we’ve a lot to build on top of that to engineer it for Mars. One of the key elements is going to be making the environment a threat. While there are rival corps and other opponents, combat's not going to be a major element; it's the hostile environment that's the biggest danger, especially in the early eras of colonization.
