Eric Cano, 40, was transferred to Memorial Hermann Hospital after a May 24 hearing in which Judge Ramona Franklin denied a request to alter his bail. He died Friday.
died last week at a Houston hospital, nearly a month after a judge denied a request to alter his bail on a murder charge and let him die at home.
Eric Cano, 40, died on June 16, 2023, at a Houston hospital from complications from cirrhosis of the liver.Smith told the court that Cano had cirrhosis and required end-of-life care, which the Harris County Jail was incapable of providing. A hospital he'd been to previously was unable to reverse his liver failure.
An autopsy identified Cano’s primary cause of death as being from “complications of hepatic cirrhosis due to chronic ethanolism,” according to medical examiner records.Police arrested Cano in October 2020 in the death of an acquaintance following a birthday party for a friend. He posted a $250,000 bond weeks later and remained free until July 2022 when Judge Franklin revoked and quadrupled his bail amount based on what the judge said was new information about his criminal history that she found.
A sheriff’s official had testified that the law enforcement agency would have preferred Cano to receive continued medical care elsewhere, and not in the jail. The sheriff’s office secured a transfer to a hospital days later.
