KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 11 — Caretaker Terengganu menteri besar Datuk Seri Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar tonight announced a special state holiday on Sunday for voters to take part in elections there and in five other states.“This decision was made to allow voters from outside the state but working in Terengganu to return to their respective voting centres in Kelantan, Kedah, Selangor, Negeri Sembilan, and Penang.
“The announcement is also to facilitate state civil servants who will be on duty late into the night to assist the Election Commission across the state on polling day.” Earlier today, Ahmad Samsuri’s counterpart in Selangor, Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari, also announced a special state holiday on Monday, albeit one that was conditional on his coalition winning the state election tomorrow.
Amirudin’s conditional announcement caused the Coalition for Free and Fair Elections to accuse him of abuse and vote buying, as well as call for the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission to investigate the offer. The six states are holding their elections tomorrow as they did not dissolve their state assemblies along with Parliament for the 15th general election last year.
