Monday’s clashes took place as Israel observed Jerusalem Day, which marks its capture of the East Jerusalem and the walled Old City—home to important Muslim, Jewish and Christian holy sites—in the 1967 Arab-Israeli war.Reuters, Israeli officials have banned the Jewish groups from visiting the holy plaza which houses the Al-Aqsa mosque—Islam’s third holiest site.
Officials will also reroute a nationalist Jerusalem Day parade featuring thousands of Jewish youth waving Israeli flags which the Palestinians widely perceive as provocative.in the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood of East Jerusalem. An Israeli court had ruled in favor of Jewish settlers’ claim to the land on which the Palestinian homes are located. The issue is now in front of the country’s Supreme Court which deferred its hearing of the issue on Sunday.
