Tennis star Novak Djokovic is spending a key religious holiday, Orthodox Christmas, in an Australian detention hotel working on his challenge against deportation. Attention is moving away from his vaccination status onto how he wound up in this situation.
Thank you dear people, all around the world for using your voice to send love to my husband,” she posted on Twitter.
Djokovic has been a vaccine skeptic, and has declined to acknowledge if he’s had shots for COVID-19, but there can’t be any doubt he traveled to Australia, arriving just before midnight on Wednesday, believing his paperwork was all in order. But when he landed at the airport, the Australian government’s Border Force canceled Djokovic’s visa, saying he “failed to provide appropriate evidence to meet the entry requirements.”
Tennis Australia said Djokovic’s request for an exemption “was granted following a rigorous review process.” Neither Tennis Australia nor Djokovic revealed the reason he sought an exemption.
