Republican Tennessee Representative Andy Ogles is advocating for a constitutional amendment that would permit former President Donald Trump to seek a third term in office. Ogles argues that the damage inflicted by the Biden administration necessitates extended leadership from Trump, but his proposal faces significant obstacles and has drawn criticism from both Democrats and some Republicans.

Republican Tennessee Representative Andy Ogle s is steadfast in his pursuit of an amendment to the U.S. Constitution that would enable former President Donald Trump to seek a third term in office. Ogles made this stance clear in a recent Sunday interview with Newsmax, stating that while his bill faces an uphill battle for ratification, he considers it 'very important' for the future of the United States. Newsweek has reached out to Ogles' office for further comment.

This proposal has sparked considerable controversy. Democratic figures have repeatedly warned that a return to power for Trump could lead to authoritarian rule. Trump himself has publicly stated that he would not support any constitutional amendment aimed at allowing him to run for a third term. Ogles introduced a House joint resolution on January 23rd, targeting the 22nd Amendment which currently prevents a president from being elected more than twice. His proposed amendment suggests altering the 22nd Amendment to state that no individual shall be elected to the presidency more than three times, and that no additional term can be served after completing two consecutive terms. Crucially, Ogles' wording indicates that previous presidents who served two consecutive terms, such as Barack Obama or George W. Bush, would also be barred from running for a third term under this amendment. Under Article V of the Constitution, any amendment requires approval from two-thirds of both the House of Representatives and the Senate. Furthermore, it must be ratified by at least 38 out of the 50 U.S. states. This means securing support from multiple Democratic lawmakers and states would be essential for Ogles' amendment to allow Trump to run for a third term. Some Republicans have also expressed disapproval of the idea. Ogles acknowledged during his Newsmax interview that his amendment would require 'a lot of work' to achieve ratification. He argued that Trump should be granted additional time in office, claiming it would take 'a decade to reverse' the damage allegedly inflicted by the Biden administration. This proposal has been met with widespread criticism from Democrats and constitutional experts. The 22nd Amendment was ratified in 1951 primarily as a response to Franklin D. Roosevelt's four terms as president. The two-term limit for presidents was established by Congress to mitigate potential abuses of power. The Constitution has undergone 27 amendments since its inception in 1787. The most recent amendment, passed in 1992, prohibits members of Congress from granting themselves pay raises during an ongoing session.
