Two Tennessee lawmakers have introduced the STOP ELON Act, seeking to penalize individuals who illegally interfere with the distribution of government benefits. The bill, sponsored by State Senator Jeff Yarbro and Representative Jason Powell, aims to address concerns about Elon Musk's reported access to the U.S. Treasury Department's federal payment system.

Two Tennessee lawmakers are targeting the reported actions of Elon Musk's access to the U.S. Treasury Department's federal payment system, filing what they call the STOP ELON Act in an effort to create criminal and civil penalties for persons who illegally interfere with the distribution of government benefits in Tennessee.is sponsored by State Senator Jeff Yarbro in the Senate and Representative Jason Powell in the House, though no bill number has been created.
In a statement released on the bill, Sen. Yarbro says "If Elon Musk illegally hurts Tennesseans, he should go to jail regardless of being a trillionaire or whatever and regardless of whether he’s got a permission slip from the president. Whether through malice or incompetence, if he unlawfully blocks our citizens from getting their Social Security checks or reimbursement from Medicaid or Medicare, his vast wealth should be on the table to compensate the people who get hurt.
Specifically, Rep. Camper asks AG Skrmetti to investigate if the data of Tennesseans and Tennessee-based federal employees has been accessed, what is currently being stored and by who, what is the chain of custody for extracted data, and if any of the data has been transferred to individuals or entities prohibited from handling sensitive information.
