President-Elect Donald Trump could abolish the U.S. Department of Education, which was a part of Trump's Agenda 47. Some Republican state lawmakers believe less interference from the federal government for education will strengthen school systems in Tennessee, while some Democrats say it's detrimental because we will lose a huge part of our funding and protection.
Republican Sen. Mark Pody supports the move and says education was never supposed to be regulated by the federal government.“I think they’ve overstepped their power and authority at that point,” Senator Pody said.“Almost all the standards that are set for ensuring that they get a high-quality education, that they get some access to learning and a better future. Those rules are primarily brought in by the federal government,” Senator Yarbro said.
