Most common laws you might be breaking at home - and they could set you back £44,100

People are being warned of the ten laws they could accidentally be breaking from the comfort of their own home, without even realising. A new study by property experts at Lajollalife.com has listed the everyday laws that homeowners are unknowingly breaking, and they could set you back a whopping £44,100.

And now, UK homeowners who do not comply with newly introduced energy performance regulations could face penalties. These include imprisonment of up to one year or fines amounting to £15,000.Google search data shows there are around 18,000 people searching for ‘how to fix a leaky tap every’ month, but according to The Water Industry Act 1999 , you could be fined £1,000 for not repairing it.

When ordering a new bin from your local council, it can take more than two weeks for it to arrive, so it’s better to act fast if you notice a small crack.According to The Building Act 1984, homeowners need to maintain their gutters and drains in a good state of repair. This means overflowing, blocked or broken drains could cost you a hefty £5,000 fine.

So next time, if an unruly neighbour leaves a note on your car, maybe it’s your sign to park somewhere else and avoid facing up to a £100 fine.Throwing your TV in the bin is illegal under the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Regulations 2013. If you’re caught tossing your telly into the rubbish, you could be fined up to £5,000, and you could also be ordered to pay the costs of recycling your TV.
