The Metropolitan Water District of Southern California says residents and businesses in affected areas can resume limited watering outdoors after repairs to the 36-mile pipeline.

As reservoirs decline on the Colorado River, California water agencies are under pressure to shoulder a substantial part of the inevitable cuts.

Officials estimated customers in the affected areas reduced water demand by about 30% during the repairs. The areas included the cities of Beverly Hills, Burbank, Glendale, Long Beach, Pasadena, San Fernando and Torrance, as well as areas served by the Central Basin Municipal Water District, Foothill Municipal Water District, Three Valleys Municipal Water District and the West Basin Municipal Water District.

Yellow patches show areas of Los Angeles County that were affected by the shutdown of the Upper Feeder pipeline, which provides much of Southern California’s water. The leak was initially discovered in April, and the pipeline had been operating at a reduced capacity under a temporary fix while the MWD designed a more permanent solution. The repair, which included the installation of a 108-inch connector pipeline, was needed to “avoid a possible critical failure to the water supply,” officials said.
