Temple women's basketball lost to South Florida 64-57 despite a strong start. Early foul trouble and a lack of rebounding contributed to the Owls' defeat.
Temple women's basketball faced a tough challenge on Saturday against one of the top teams in the American Athletic Conference, South Florida. Despite a promising start, the Owls ultimately fell short, losing 64-57 at the Liacouras Center. Temple built a four-point lead late in the first quarter, but South Florida quickly turned the tide, closing the first half with a 10-1 run and maintaining the lead for the remainder of the game.
Although the Owls managed to cut the deficit to just two points with six minutes remaining, they couldn't overcome the Bulls' strong performance. Coach Diane Richardson attributed the loss to early foul trouble and a lack of rebounding. Temple found themselves in foul trouble early on, with four players accumulating two fouls by halftime, including key guards Tiarra East, Tarriyonna Gary, and Kaylah Turner. This forced the Owls to disrupt their rotations, leading to a drop-off in performance. The Owls also struggled on the boards, being outrebounded 40-31 by South Florida. Coach Richardson emphasized the importance of rebounding, stating that it was the key difference in the game. She also expressed frustrations with the disparity in fouls, noting that Temple's 23 fouls compared to South Florida's 13 was unusual.
