Speaking in Tembisa on Wednesday, Mayor Tania Campbell welcomed some of the concerns raised by residents, but said criminals elements had taken advantage of the situation.
"The investigation is taking place. We want to ensure that no life is being lost. The situation in Tembisa is unfortunate in how it escalated. "We have brought in the relief policy. There are systems that indigent people should follow to qualify. We can’t change policies that would be negative to the poor. We should enhance it. We have brought in the debt relief policy," she said.Maile agreed with Campbell that some of the issues raised by residents were genuine.
"Billing is one of the biggest problems . If we don’t deal with billing, it will impact people who pay . We want people to pay for services. There are tariffs that Ekurhuleni has no space to manoeuvre, especially water and electricity.
