This article dives into the wacky world of television, exploring shows with incredibly strange premises that left viewers wondering 'What were they thinking?' From aliens, sitcoms, and musicals to monsters, superheroes, and gender-bending antics, these shows are a testament to the wild creativity (or perhaps lack thereof) that sometimes graces the small screen.

Before its premiere, a certain show sparked a lot of curiosity and raised eyebrows with its unusual premise. Many questioned how the plot could possibly work and exclaimed, 'That sounds weird!'\ However, it went on to become not only one of Marvel's finest creations but also one of the greatest television series of all time. It's important to remember that not every show with a quirky concept succeeds.

Some fall flat, raise red flags from the start, and ultimately leave viewers wondering what the creators were thinking. Here are a few examples that range from 'WTF?' to 'Who the hell approved this?!':\One such show, part of the TGIF lineup, centered on a human father, Doug Brody, who gets abducted by a single alien mother, Cookie. Instead of panicking, Doug falls head over heels in love with her. The two tie the knot and embark on the unconventional journey of raising their children—both human and alien—under one roof, much like a typical sitcom family. \ Another peculiar show transported viewers to the world of a 1950s-style sitcom family, the Nielsens, who were part of an old TV show also called 'The Sitcom Relocation Program.' Despite inhabiting a black-and-white reality, they had a magical remote that could turn them into color. After relocating to New Jersey, their neighbor, a teen sitcom enthusiast, stumbled upon their secret identity. He swore his allegiance to secrecy. Adding to the absurdity, the show featured actors from classic TV sitcoms reprising their roles (like Gale Gordon as Mr. Mooney from 'The Lucy Show,' as seen in the photo above), visiting the Nielsens as they were also part of the Sitcom Relocation Program. \ In a baffling twist, one show followed the exploits of LAPD officers and detectives as they tackled crime and corruption. However, the characters would spontaneously break into original Broadway-style songs and fully choreographed dances, making it a truly bizarre and unexpected fusion of genres. This one is particularly perplexing considering that movie musicals (outside of Disney animated movies) weren't exactly popular in the 1990s. \ Another show focused on attorney David Crabtree, played by Jerry Van Dyke, who discovered that his recently purchased antique car, a 1928 Porter, was possessed by the spirit of his late mother, Gladys. She communicated with him through the car radio, offering advice, meddling in his life, and trying to protect him from the greedy car collector, Captain Manzini, who coveted the Porter. This show, filmed during a time when sitcoms produced a high number of episodes per season, lasted only one season but still managed to churn out 30 episodes of this peculiar concept. \ One teenage girl, Evie Garland, celebrating her 13th birthday, uncovered a shocking truth: she was half-alien. She discovered she possessed special powers, initially just stopping time. Her mother confessed that her father, Troy, was an alien and that she had a special prism that would allow Evie to talk to him as if through a phone. Fun fact: Burt Reynolds lent his voice to Troy. \ A group of fairy tale characters, the Charmings, believed they had killed her evil stepmother, the Queen, by throwing her down a pit. However, the Queen survived and cast a spell on them, causing the Charmings to fall into a deep sleep for 1,000 years. But in a twist of fate, the Queen also accidentally cast the spell on herself, the Magic Mirror, and one of the Dwarfs. Fast forward 1,000 years, and they all wake up in suburban Los Angeles during the 1980s, struggling to adjust to their new reality. True to typical '80s sitcom style, the Queen, the Magic Mirror, and the Dwarf move in with the Charmings, all cohabitating under one roof, because why not? As if this premise wasn't outlandish enough, the show ran for two seasons. \ The series revolved around Ted, a science teacher who was unaware that he was a descendant of Dr. Frankenstein. He inherited an inn in New England with a caretaker named Frank. Turns out, Frank was Frankenstein's Monster, who desperately needed a special serum to stay alive, which he begged Ted to create. \ Another show centered on Dr. Jonathan Chase, a wealthy British man and a professor at New York University (why was he working if he was rich?). His secret ability was to transform into any animal. Dr. Chase used his power to solve crimes and bring criminals to justice, effectively moonlighting as a superhero in his spare time from teaching. \ There was a show about an American Hollywood talent agent, Tim Blair, who helped his brother with a photo shoot by dressing as a hippie. His brother sent the photos to the UK, where a modeling agent mistakenly assumed Tim was a woman and offered him a modeling job. Tim saw an opportunity to reunite with British actress Julie Reinfeld, whom he had dated while she filmed a movie in LA. So, Tim rebranded himself as Timmie and adopted a female persona to become a model in London, all to be closer to Julie. If you find this premise unbelievable, you can watch the 'Timmie' series yourself. \ One 'buddy cop' comedy featured Detective Alexander Holmes, a clumsy but well-meaning police detective, who was assigned a new partner—Yoyo, a humanoid android designed to assist in law enforcement. Apparently, two calculators glued onto a tin box passed for an android in 1976. \ Finally, a direct sequel to a classic '60s sitcom (but with a new cast)
