When nine-year-old Henry Witham suffered a traumatic brain injury in a fall at the family farm, no one was prepared for how hard it would be to find the medical helped he needed.

When nine-year-old Henry Witham had a fall at the family farm in 2021, he suffered a traumatic brain injury."He was a different kid," his mother Connie Witham said.Following the accident, the family had to find many specialists: occupational therapists, neuropsychologists, speech therapists and a paediatrician.

Ms Witham said there was a lack of consistency, with a revolving door of locum doctors, but finding a private paediatrician was proving impossible. "We're talking about children who can't hear properly, whose language isn't developing, aren't socialising, struggling with reading, concentrating, who may have ADHD, anxiety or autism," she said.Other ideas have been floated to alleviate the deadlock, including giving GPs and nurse practitioners greater power to treat and diagnose conditions such as ADHD.That idea was a recommendation of a recent parliamentary report, which the WA government said it was considering.
