A Bridgeview teen whose violent arrest in Oak Lawn sparked protests will be charged with a weapons offense, according to the Cook County state’s attorney’s office.

Members of the Arab American community hold a rally/protest July 28 outside the Oak Lawn Police Department in response to a viral video of a 17 year-old boy allegedly being punched following a traffic stop.

Police said a firearm was recovered from a bag slung over the teen’s shoulder after he was taken into custody. A judge hearing the matter made a finding of probable cause and placed the teen on a 10 p.m. curfew. He is next due back in juvenile court Sept. 22 in Bridgeview, according to the state’s attorney’s office.

Vittorio said responding officers feared the teen had a firearm in an “accessory bag” draped over his right shoulder, although the firearm was not recovered until the teen had been shot with a stun gun and handcuffed. An attorney for the family has not acknowledged the teen was in possession of a firearm.

On Thursday, the local CAIR chapter said it was disappointed that the state’s attorney decided to pursue any charges against the teen, “given the brutal nature and excessive force used during the improper search” conducted by police, Phil Robertson, litigation director, said in a news release. Video taken by eyewitnesses and police dashboard camera footage show initially two officers restraining the teen in the street in the area of 95th Street and McVicker Avenue following a foot chase.
