A Chickasaw High student is recovering at the hospital after a suspected fentanyl overdose at the school.
‘Fentanyl is in everything’: After Alabama 15-year-old’s overdose death, authorities target deadly opioid
“It was reported to us by a student who was an eyewitness and it was reported by a coach that it was fentanyl,” said Chief Keith Miller. Miller said that medical personnel at the scene reported to him that the student was unresponsive at the time, and had to be transported by ambulance to University Hospital in Mobile.“In order to get a 100% definitive answer , we would not know until we got a toxicology report back,” he said.The overdose was a rarity in the ongoing fentanyl crisis in the U.S. in that it occurred inside a school.
It’s also a deadly amount. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, illicit fentanyl is up to 100 times more potent than morphine and many times that of heroin.The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report that 107,622 people died from drug overdoses in 2021 in the U.S., with 66.2% or 71,238 deaths tied to synthetic opioids such as fentanyl.Alabama has experienced a 16% increase in drug overdose deaths between April 2021 and April 2022.
