A trainee physiotherapist has been given a heartbreaking diagnosis after a lump she found in her neck grew to the size of a golf ball in a matter of weeks.
Megan Mahoney from Helmshore, had no other symptoms, and was otherwise fit and healthy when she made the discovery at 18. Even when doctors quizzed her for other signs, they drew a blank.
"He even asked if she had any other signs of it, such as night sweats and when I questioned this, he said if I have to ask then it means she didn't as you wake up drenched." Initially, Megan was cared for at Royal Blackburn Hospital until being asked if she would rather have her treatment at the Christie in Manchester, where she would be put on a ward with other patients a similar age.
"They've also offered us emotional support, with phone calls or anything if we need it." At the time of her diagnosis, Megan had just completed an apprenticeship in sports massage and was looking to join a contract in Manchester to become a physiotherapist.
