A ‘wonderful’ teenager from Preston who had ‘everything to live for’ tragically died after getting into difficulty in the sea at St Annes
.
One of the group, Lewis Knight, told the hearing how he too was out swimming and turned back when he heard the screams, telling the inquest: "I was trying to lift his head out of the water which made me go underwater." He said when he and others managed to get Adam back to the shore 'while trying to keep Adam’s head out of the water as much as we could'.
The hearing heard how police were alerted at around 7.20pm that evening by the coastguard to the incident, 200 metres south of St Annes pier, and that the tide had been about two miles out. North West Ambulance service paramedics were alerted at 7.07pm with an ambulance arriving 14 minutes later, despite some initial confusion over the exact location of Adam, and with the crew gaining access to the scene via a four by four vehicle.
Mr Duncan said there was some signage in place, but said that particular location was unguarded, telling the hearing: “Like most of our coastline, it’s unguarded with really only the RNLI and volunteers.” To which the senior coroner replied: “When you say, unguarded, you mean, there’s no permanent guard in place on that beach at that location, is that what you are saying?” Mr Duncan replied: “Yes, that is correct.
