A teenager, 15, gave birth to a healthy baby on 1 January.The government has promised to address the scourge of preventable teenage pregnancies.

A 15-year-old girl is one of the mothers who gave birth on New Year's Day - 509 babies were born in South Africa between midnight and midday on 1 January. National Health spokesperson Foster Mohale said the department congratulated all parents blessed with babies born in health facilities across the country on New Year's Day. “The current number of babies consists of 250 girls and 259 boys recorded between midnight and midday on the first day of 2023.

"In collaboration with various stakeholders, including youth organisations, the department will intensify the sexual reproductive health awareness campaign to improve access to family planning services."
