Seth MacFarlane’s live-action Ted series is back for season 2 on Peacock, but will there be a season 3? MacFarlane’s long-running animated shows have been on the air for decades. Family Guy and American Dad! are both past their 20th season and showing no signs of slowing down.
But historically, MacFarlane has had a lot less luck with his live-action shows. His Star Trek-adjacent sci-fi drama The Orville is still hanging in the balance with three seasons, waiting to either be renewed for a fourth or definitively taken off the air. Now that Ted’s second season is streaming on Peacock, it’s similarly waiting in the lurch. Will Peacock continue the series into season 3, or cancel it at season 2? Ted Has Not Officially Been Renewed For Season 3 Peacock has not yet officially renewed Ted for a third season, but the streamer doesn’t usually do hasty renewals. Season 1 premiered in January 2024, and the show wasn’t renewed for season 2 until May. So, it might be four or five months before Peacock has the data it needs to make a firm decision about whether to go ahead with Ted season 3. Ted has been one of the biggest hits for Peacock, and the streamer doesn’t have a lot of Stranger Things or The Mandalorian-sized blockbuster shows in its library. But since the title character is fully CG, it’s also a very expensive show to produce. So, it’ll take some deliberation to decide whether the streaming numbers for season 2 warrant the expense of making season 3. What Seth MacFarlane Has Said About Ted Season 3 MacFarlane was recently interviewed by Screen Rant’s Grant Hermanns, who asked him whether Ted would return for a third season. But MacFarlane didn’t confirm the show’s fate one way or the other. He carefully said, at this time, “there are no direct plans” to continue the live-action series. So, there’s still a chance it could come back, but there’s nothing solid in place. Does Ted Season 2 Leave The Door Open For Season 3? Ted season 2 has a pretty definitive ending. The series could continue into season 3, but it would be a totally different show. In seasons 1 and 2, Ted and John were living with their parents and their cousin Blaire, while going to high school. But now that they’ve graduated high school and set their sights on getting jobs and moving out, a potential third season would break up the Bennett household. It would be like the recent King of the Hill reboot, where adult Bobby’s storylines are mostly kept separate from Hank and Peggy’s storylines. The season 2 finale opens with Ted and John graduating from high school , so the most obvious next step would be to send them off to college. But the episode confirms that they didn’t get accepted into any colleges. The ending of Ted season 2 could function as the conclusion of the series, since it begins Ted and John’s adulthood and connects the prequel story to the original story. But there’s still plenty of time between the events of the show and the events of the films. Season 3 could follow Ted and John as they get their first jobs and move into their first apartment. It’ll be a few years before John turns into Mark Wahlberg and starts dating Mila Kunis’ Lori, so there are plenty more stories to tell in this franchise. The series won’t feel incomplete without season 3, but the door is open for a third installment. Ted: The Animated Series Development Explained While Peacock hasn’t confirmed whether the live-action Ted show will get a third season, the streamer has confirmed that it’s expanding the Ted franchise. In 2024, Peacock announced that an animated Ted series was in development. Whereas the live-action show is a prequel, Ted: The Animated Series will serve as a sequel to the films. Mark Wahlberg is confirmed to reprise his role as John in the animated series, so we’ll see where he ends up after the events of Ted 2. Ted 2 ended with Ted becoming a father to a son named Apollo Creed Clubber Lang, so the animated series could see him adjusting to his new parental role. It’ll certainly be a different family dynamic than the nuclear Griffins. You can unsubscribe anytime. MacFarlane initially developed Ted as an animated series before pivoting to making it his feature-length directorial debut. So, after two live-action movies and a live-action show, it brings the franchise full circle to turn it into a cartoon. MacFarlane has the most experience in this field, so it’ll be interesting to see what he does with the Ted franchise in this medium. Whether Ted gets a third season or not, we’ll definitely be seeing more Ted on Peacock. If the animated series and the second season of the live-action show are a big enough success, Universal might even greenlight Ted 3 for a theatrical release, more than a decade after the last movie.Since Ted hasn’t been officially renewed for season 3, there’s no official release date for Ted season 3. But, going off the hiatus between seasons 1 and 2, we can make an educated guess. Season 2 aired a little over two years after season 1, so we can assume that a potential third season would be released around mid-2028.
