In honor of the show's 40th anniversary, Ted Danson looks back on how Cheers helped shape his career. 'Everything I do is because of the popularity of that show. It still makes me laugh when I watch sometimes.'
Ted Danson thanks Cheers for launching his career, four decades later. Starring Danson as ex-baseball player, ex-alcoholic, and current bartender/owner Sam Malone, the NBC sitcom Cheers premiered in 1982. Though the series initially didn't fare well with audiences and was nearly canceled, it eventually became the longest running multi-cam sitcom in history with 11 seasons and 275 episodes, until The Big Bang Theory relegated it to second.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY Cheers boasts an impressive legacy, having also launched the popular sitcom Frasier, a spin-off focusing on therapist Frasier Crane . Though its other spin-off attempts didn't pan out, Cheers remains one of the top-rated shows of the '80s and topped it off with a satisfying finale.
"Everything I do is because of the popularity of that show. It still makes me laugh when I watch sometimes. It's funny, and it's great to see my friends, and they make me laugh." How Cheers Helped Shape The Modern Comedy Landscape It's no surprise that Danson still finds episodes of the sitcom amusing given its penchant for witty humor, which many regard as ahead of its time. Indeed, Cheers' impact on contemporary comedy series cannot be overstated, with the hit show having helped create the template for the popular genre of workplace comedies, which are a modern staple.
The gratitude that Danson expresses for Cheers after four decades is touching, and he has managed to find ways to pay tribute to the series in his other roles. Most notably, during his time as Michael in Michael Schur's sitcom The Good Place, Danson spent time behind a bar in the season 2 finale, posing as a charming and insightful bartender to help steer Eleanor toward the right path.
His character would not be ok in todays world

Trump cheers on Ginni Thomas for standing by false claims that 2020 election was stolenFormer President Donald Trump praised Ginni Thomas, the wife of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, for telling the Jan. 6 committee that she believes the 2020 election was stolen. There’s no question the election was stolen, it was just done within the irregular bounds of the pandemic. All the changes to the system (mail ballots, ballot boxes, zuck bucks, no voter ID) benefited Biden and harmed Trump. Had those changes not taken place, Biden is crushed. What a belief... If her husband bases his judgements on belief rather than on facts, good night America!
