On Saturday, the U.S. set a shocking new record that exemplifies just how dominant the Americans have been at this year’s games in Italy. With its performance over the weekend, Team USA has now surpassed the most gold medals ever won by the nation during a single Winter Games, claiming 11 top prizes throughout this year’s Olympics.
Team USA’s previous record for most gold medals in a single Winter Olympics was 10 during the 2002 Winter Games in Salt Lake City.The U.S.’s record for most medals in a single Winter Olympics is 34, set during the 2002 games, which were the last Olympics to take place on American soil. Team USA has won 31 total medals as of 3 p.m. ET Saturday, the most ever achieved by the country at an overseas Winter Games, per ESPN Insights. The American women have been particularly impressive throughout this year’s event, securing six gold medals to help support such a historic effort. “Our focus and our strategy has always been about breadth," said Sarah Hirshland, the CEO of the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee,. “We want to win in everything. We want to make every sport better. Some could argue there are countries that go a mile deep in certain sports and really dominate.
