Hitting coach Chris Valaika says it was good to see Guardians hitters not stray from their game plan.
Valaika told reporters Sunday that he was pleased as the inning grew longer and longer because Cleveland hitters did not stray away from their plan.
“The contact’s always been there,” Valaika said. “It’s taken some time to have them feel more comfortable taking those chances and looking to be aggressive in counts or on pitches. A lot of these guys have a lot of history off the league now, so I think they feel the freedom to look to do damage early in the count, knowing that we can always dial it back later to put the ball in play.”
“Mechanically, he’s sticking to the things that he worked on through the offseason. There’s always going to be some of the little tweaks that we’ll work through with things that are showing up,” Valaika said. “Overall, it’s been more approach-related, keeping him in the strike zone, hunting pitches that he can do damage on. He’s been getting himself into good counts and we’ve seen the results come from that.
