The JCC Maccabi Games serve as a spark to ignite Jewish pride and identity in youth ages 12 to 17, offering them an opportunity to develop lifelong friendships with Jewish peers from around the world.
The Cleveland delegation sent 33 athletes, three coaches and two delegation heads to the 41st annual Maccabi Games in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- It was all fun and games, but in the end it was also about making new friends and exploring Jewish heritage.
Maccabi Games & Access is a dynamic experience of Olympic-style sports that features baseball, basketball, ice hockey, girls volleyball, flag football, lacrosse, boys and girls soccer, table tennis, tennis, swimming and dance competitions. • The 14U boys soccer team took silver, with Cleveland delegates Jonah Greller, Dylan Garfinkel, Jack Rindsberg, Asher Gearity and coach Joe Lustig.
“When I won gold, it didn’t seem real to me. It was really amazing and incredible to bring home gold and represent Cleveland,” she said.Second year Maccabi soccer player Jonah Greller, 14, of Beachwood, played on the boys 14U soccer team that came in second to Montreal in the finals. “It was a very close game and we were losing for a lot of the game and in the last minute we scored a goal to tie. We were going into a penalty shootout, and typical penalty shootout is about four to five shots each, but each team took like 17 to 18 shots and we won it on the last shot.”“I have a lot of my friends returning and friends that I met from other cities. it was so much fun last year in San Diego and wanted to relive that,” he said.
Kyla also enjoyed her first year at the Maccabi games and would recommend the games to other Jewish teenagers.
