Teal pumpkins in Austin signal non-food treats for kids with allergies, part of the Teal Pumpkin Project, making Halloween safer and more inclusive.
Tuesday, we’ll be seeing a lot of them out trick-or-treating, but the spookiest thing this Halloween for some families could be food allergies.“He’ll end up with a huge pile of candy that is not only unsafe for him, but could literally take his life,” said parent Sarah Fry.
The pumpkins, along with teal signs and banners, and pumpkin leaf bags reading “non-food treats here,” are part of the Food Allergy Research & Education’sThe project is a way to be inclusive to families with food allergies, by making it safer for kids to trick-or-treat. “These food allergies can be very, very serious and very severe, where some of these children, if they eat the wrong food, they have anaphylaxis, and it can be really, really life threatening,” said Lieberman.“This is a high-risk time for accidental ingestion to food allergens, especially between Halloween and New Year’s, and that’s because of trick-or-treating, you know, parties, potlucks, etcetera,” said allergist at Austin Diagnostic Clinic Dr. John Villacis.
