Trump has vowed to eliminate the department, suggesting it has devolved into a needless bureaucracy.
CHICAGO, ILLINOIS - AUGUST 22: President of the American Federation of Teachers Randi Weingarten speaks on stage during the final day of the Democratic National Convention at the United Center on August 22, 2024 in Chicago, Illinois.
Weingarten, who supported Vice President Kamala Harris's presidential campaign, said such a change would not have a significant impact on teachers across the country. She described herself as taking a “wait-and-see” approach to Trummp's proposal. Earlier this month, Weingarten expressed a willingness to work with Trump education secretary nominee Linda McMahon.
