It means thousands more teachers could join up to 300,000 NEU members across England and Wales that are set to walk out next month in the first nationwide teachers’ strike for 15 years
Another primary school teacher from Dorset said they had quit NASUWT and signed up to the NEU amid frustrations over their union’s handling of last week’s strike ballot.
“The main reason I’ve done that is I don’t like the idea that I’ve put my trust in this place — I’m actually paying for and they’re not getting things done.” More than 23,500 schools in England and Wales are expected to close or partially close on select dates in February and March unless union leaders strike a deal with ministers in an ongoing dispute over pay.
However, Dr Mary Bousted and Kevin Courtney, the joint general secretaries of the NEU, have insisted that a full-scale walkout could still be avoided if the Education Secretary agrees to an improved pay deal for teachers.
