Teachers at Hempfield School District have been working without a contract since this past June.
Each side has made their side heard throughout this process, with the latest meeting between the two sides taking place on September 17. Teachers and parents are hopeful that an agreement will be reached the next time the two sides get together.
"Their initial proposal, I would say, it was a pretty good initial proposal," said Hempfield Education Association President and Hempfield High School teacher Anthony Jannotta. "Since then we have tried to find compromise and have struggled to find that compromise." Last week, the teachers union unanimously agreed to begin a "work to rule" order, meaning teachers will no longer need to show up for voluntary events such as school clubs. The school board responded to this decision, issuing a statement to CBS 21 News that said:The order has not had an impact on students just yet, but could eventually lead to issues down the line.
" that why put in some of these extra hours if they're not being compensated accordingly," Jannotta said.
