Across the country, teachers are drafting their wills as part of back-to-school preparation. Some are marching to cemeteries in protest, while others are inviting officials to their looming funeral services.

Andrea Clark, a Florida fifth-grade teacher, got local attention when she brought her will to a School Board meeting last month.

In a statement provided by Reddick's Duval County school district, Superintendent Diana Greene said she understands the teachers’ concerns. “If you do not heed this science, if you do the easy thing and open these schools, then I cordially invite you to my funeral, to the funerals of my Black and brown students, to the funerals of my colleagues, to the funerals of the people who will be cleaning these infected classrooms, preparing the lunches, driving the buses, because that is what we’re talking about,” Fischer said. “The blood will be on your hands. That is not hyperbole.

Additionally, since younger people who contract COVID-19 may be asymptomatic, they’re more likely to unknowingly spread the virus to more vulnerable populations.found that one in five teachers say they’re unlikely to go return to the classroom this fall.“For me, the decision was extremely difficult because there’s a lot of other factors at play, with my family, with what’s right,” she said.
