More than 800 Scott Middle School students in Hammond received an unexpected e-learning day at home Friday after dozens of teachers called off school.

Parents received a morning email from the school telling them the school experienced “excessive call-offs,” and it was implementing an “emergency asynchronous e-learning day,” allowing students to work independently at home.A parent wrote on social media that teachers were upset over overcrowded classrooms and scheduling.Hammond Teachers Federation Local 394 president Louis P. Gikas couldn’t be reached for comment and Scott Principal Andrew Merritt also couldn’t be reached.

The school, located at 3635 173rd St., apologized to parents in the email saying it tried to cover as many classrooms as possible, but couldn’t do it and safely follow the regular schedule. School City of Hammond spokesman Nathaniel V. George said in a statement: “Unfortunately, we experienced a high volume of teacher call-offs this morning. All full-time SCH employees have benefit days they can use, so we can’t speculate as to why there were so many today.”

The state Department of Education website lists the school with 68 teachers with 68% rated as effective and 27% as highly effective.
