An image of César Chavez is shown on a mural in San Francisco, Wednesday, March 18, 2026. SAN ANTONIO - Texas schools have been advised to suspend all lessons relating to Cesar Chavez amid major allegations of abuse.

On Monday, the Texas Education Agency told school districts to cancel or redirect any events tied to Cesar Chavez and to remove references to him from classroom lessons and materials, following what the Texas Education Agency described as “recent horrific and widely acknowledged allegations of sexual abuse committed by Cesar Chavez.”In a statement dated March 23, 2026, the TEA said some Texas school systems may have planned events for Cesar Chavez Day, which is recognized under Texas Government Code 662.013 as an optional holiday on March 31. The agency said that, “In alignment with Governor Greg Abbott’s recent directive, school systems in Texas should cancel or otherwise redirect events and activities tied to Chavez.” The TEA also addressed classroom instruction, noting that under the currently adopted Social Studies Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, students are required to learn about Chavez in multiple grades, including grade five and U.S. history. The agency said the State Board of Education has been working over the last year to rewrite the social studies TEKS and that “the recent allegations that have come to light will likely result in any student expectations explicitly focused on Chavez being removed moving forward.”Until any changes are adopted, the TEA said districts should act now to adjust what is already being taught. “Given this, school systems in Texas should eliminate, modify and otherwise alter any learning activities, individual lessons, and ancillary materials to remove references to Chavez,” the agency said. The TEA cited Texas Education Code 28.0022, which states that “a teacher may not be compelled to discuss a widely debated and currently controversial issue of public policy or social affairs,” and said instructional materials created before the allegations became widely known could conflict with that requirement. The agency said it is formally notifying districts that it will not treat the removal of Chavez-focused content as a compliance issue. “This letter serves as formal notice that the Texas Education Agency will not consider failure to teach any student expectation focused on Chavez as out of compliance with statutory requirements related to TEKS coverage,” the statement said. The TEA said it and regional education service centers are available to provide technical assistance to districts that want help adjusting instructional materials. For questions about instructional materials, the agency directed districts to submit an Instructional Materials help desk ticket, and for questions about the social studies TEKS, to submit a Curriculum help desk ticket.Washington County deputies say a Girl Scouts camp in West Bend, Wisconsin, was the site of a drug and illegal firearms operation uncovered earlier this month.SeSAN ANTONIO — The Spurs are responding to a viral TikTok video that appears to show a woman making some anti-Hispanic comments at Thursday night’s game.“All ofCONVERSE, Texas - A massive fire involving multiple semi-trailers broke out Saturday afternoon, prompting hazmat crews to handle the situation.Fire crews were dispatched around 1:30 p.m. to Farm-to-Market 1516 North, wheSAN ANTONIO - Two people are dead following a high-speed crash early Sunday morning after a reported series of vehicle break-ins in a far West Side neighborhoodSAN ANTONIO — The city’s first diverging diamond interchange is now open!TxDOT announced on Sunday the DDI traffic pattern at Blanco Road and Loop 1604 is now o
