A new study reveals the alarming presence of microplastics in tea bags, highlighting the potential health risks associated with their consumption.

Recent research from the UAB Department of Genetics and Microbiology has revealed a concerning source of micro and nanoplastic (MNPL) pollution originating from commonly used food packaging , especially tea bags . This study sheds light on the potential health hazards these particles present, as they can permeate human cells, and urges for swift regulatory action.

Plastic pollution has escalated into a critical environmental challenge, with profound implications for ecosystems and public well-being. Among the diverse sources contributing to this crisis, food packaging stands out due to its role in exposing consumers to micro and nanoplastics through ingestion and inhalation. The Mutagenesis Group at UAB led this investigation, aiming to characterize MNPLs released from various commercially available tea bags. The findings indicate the release of substantial amounts of nano-sized particles, posing a risk to consumer exposure to these harmful pollutants. The analysis centered on tea bags fabricated from three distinct materials: nylon-6, polypropylene, and cellulose. The results were striking: polypropylene released approximately 1.2 billion particles per milliliter, with an average particle size of 136.7 nanometers. Conversely, cellulose emitted around 135 million particles per milliliter, averaging 244 nanometers in size, while nylon-6 released roughly 8.18 million particles per milliliter, averaging 138.4 nanometers. To ascertain the nature of these particles and their potential impact, the research team employed advanced analytical techniques such as scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), dynamic light scattering (DLS), laser Doppler velocimetry (LDV), and nanoparticle tracking analysis (NTA). UAB researcher Alba Garcia underscored the significance of utilizing these state-of-the-art methods to deepen our understanding of MNPLs and their effects on human health
