For the better part of Saturday’s game, the only intriguing questions was how many of the 43,868 faithful would return after three lightning delays.Texas Christian University Horned Frogs tight end DJ Rogers celebrates after a touchdown against the Baylor Bears with Texas Christian University Horned Frogs offensive lineman Carson Bruno during an NCAA football game at Amon G.
Carter Stadium in Fort Worth on Saturday, Oct. 18, 2025.FORT WORTH — Officially, the state’s most-played rivalry is the Battle of the Bluebonnet, a title it took more than a century to earn, though it’s gone by other aliases. The best was the Revivalry. Catchy and tight, it’s a wry nod to the evangelical roots of both Baylor and TCU. Or they could have just called it the Art and Gary Bowl, in honor of the most intense six-year period in its 121-game history.at Amon Carter, the only intriguing question was how many of the 43,868 faithful would return after not one, not two, but The first came a little after the start of the fourth quarter with TCU up 14 and lasted 58 minutes. The second, 16 minutes later, was 20 seconds from expiration when officials called a third stoppage. All told, it added up to a delay of more than two hours.Get the latest D-FW sports news, analysis and opinion delivered straight to your inbox. Plus, Kevin Sherrington's A La Carte.Given the heritage of both schools, one or the other might assume either God didn’t want the game to end, or, more likely, His aim was off.Three “catastrophic mistakes” — as Sonny Dykes called a fumble return for a Baylor touchdown, a 35-yard touchdown pass late and the recovery of an onside kick — turned what had been a laugher into a nail-biter.Advertisementhave gone down as the battle of the quarterbacks, given that it featured the nation’s top QBs, at least statistically. The possibilities suggested something along the lines of what it was like from 2010-’15, when Art Briles and Gary Patterson stood across the field from each other for some of the wildest developments in any rivalry. Half were decided by three points or fewer, and in those three games, they averaged nearly a hundred points between them.Like after Baylor’s 41-38 win in ‘13, when he accused one of the Bears of headhunting and, in a curious charge, claimed Briles “came across the field” at him during the game. “I grew up in West Texas,” Briles said when asked about the charges later, “and was taught that if you don’t have anything nice to say about somebody, don’t say anything at all.” Patterson, who was not raised in West Texas, came right back after a 61-58 loss in Waco the next year with a report that a Baylor player had threatened him. Those were the days, my friends. If you were in want of a lede, Gary provided. Neither Dykes nor Dave Aranda are necessarily the type to go viral, though Sonny got bonus points for Basically, the difference in Saturday’s game early was that the Bears kept kicking field goals while the Frogs were scoring touchdowns. Baylor made a nice run in the third quarter to cut TCU’s 18-point lead to 28-21 after the start of the fourth. The problem with settling for a field goal, though, was that, three plays after Connor Hawkins’ 41-yard kick, Trent Battle ripped through the left side of Baylor’s defensive line for a 65-yard touchdown. Baylor looked as if it would fade from view, mostly because Robertson couldn’t match Hoover throw for throw. But Hoover also coughed up a fumble when the Frogs were just trying to run the clock, resulting in a Baylor touchdown and a chain reaction of unfortunate events for the home team.Once Robertson’s 35-yard heave to a diving Kole Wilson cut the Frogs’ lead to six, Obiazor iced the game by stepping in front of a throw in the flat after Baylor recovered the onside kick. The win continued diametrically-opposed trends for the Frogs, now 4-0 at home. Their bugaboo so far is the road, where they’re 0-2 since the opening win at North Carolina.Have the Frogs, who finally showed signs of a running game with 197 yards Saturday, come close to their potential?Pretty much the story all afternoon. What with all the stoppages amid TCU’s big lead, the crowd dwindled to a few thousand at the end, most of it seemingly bands, cheerleaders and drill teams. Those who left early missed a heck of a finish.
